Redgates return to The Moor for seventies shopaholics launch

Sheffield city centre culinary institution Brenda’s Traditional Fish ‘n’ Chips teamed up with the former chairman of the city’s celebrated Redgates toy shop last night for
a book launch party with a difference.

Around 100 guests came to celebrate the launch of ‘The Shopaholics Guide to 1970s Sheffield’.

The event turned into a reunion bash for scores of people that helped shape the era.

Former staff from Redgates, Sexy Rexy, Pauldens, Schofields and scores of other seventies shops were in attendance along with Peter Wigley, Sheffield’s first publicity officer, Marie-Luise Coulthard, who worked on the famous 1972 Sheffield promo film The Reel Monty that ended up fronting The Full Monty years later, plus Neil Anderson, author of ‘The Shopaholics Guide to 1970s Sheffield’.

The seventies theme was helped with style courtesy of Hotpants, the long-running seventies night operated by The Leadmill nightclub, whilst drinks will be provided by Cubana on Trippet Lane and sounds from Magic AM.

Neil Anderson said: “Anyone that remembers the amazing shopping experience the city centre offered in the 1970s will love this book. We decided the launch party had to be on The Moor as it is home to three of the biggest stores from the era that are still cornerstones of shopping today.

“Atkinsons, BHS and Debenhams have given us great support and I hope the book goes some way in helping restore confidence to the city centre and giving us something to aspire to as regeneration works continue.”

Amongst the speakers were former Redgates chairman Michael Nunn and Sandra Barley, The Moor’s Centre Liaison Manager.
