Chinese New Year celebration!

2007 was the Year of the Boar, which was joyfully seen in with colourful demonstrations, activities and performances from traditional Chinese culture.

Working closely with Jerry Cheung, a prominent member of Sheffield’s Chinese community, MoorSheffield boasted interactive Chinese Calligraphy demonstrations, Chinese painting and origami workshops face painting and a magician. Audiences were also treated to a series of performances, including a Wing Chun Kung Fu, Tai Chi Fan and Tai Chi Fist demonstrations and a traditional Chinese costume show. The Star school were also on hand with a specially choreographed dance, whilst the SCC Church band and choir provided the music.

But the stars of the show were undoubtedly the lion and dragon dancers, who processed their elaborate and colourful creatures from the Town Hall, down to The Moor, and on to London Road. The dragon is an essential symbol of Chinese New Year’s celebrations that mark the start of the planting season.
